Powell 2010 Preview
Wayne Gustaveson Utah fisheries biologist for Lake Powell annual netting surveys summary for the lower lake: "It is official. We collected less striped bass than normally seen at all netting sites. The relatively small number of stripers this year has a lot to do with the success of the fishery. While there is still an abundant supply of stripers, they are not dominating the catch as has been seen in the past. Less than average numbers have allowed shad numbers to persist into the fall and winter. There will be plenty of shad around in the spring to get the forage population started on the right foot in 2010. Gizzard shad were common in all the nets. There weren't as overwhelming as they have been in recent years but present in good numbers over the length of the lake
In all the net sets there was a persistent presence of young stripers. That means reproduction in 2009 was substantial and the new generation is anxiously waiting to eat shad next spring. Therefore forage will begin to lose ground against the present and future numbers of game fish. 2009 will be the peak as far as fish are concerned. 2010 will be the year of the anglers as catching will get easier as forage declines."
This is very good news for the anglers. The bigger than normal large and smallmouth that we caught so well last spring, will be even heavier and more aggressive. Stripers will be fat and strong with a good population of shad surviving the winter. Crappie around the brush this spring in certain areas should be epic. I can't wait......

Here's the latest Lake Powell and Lees Ferry fishing news:
Winter conditions have set in at Lake Powell. Stripers are still catchable in deep water from 30 to 80 feet on jigging spoons, heavy bucktail & marabou jigs, swimbaits and even cut anchovies. Trolling will work if an active school feeding on shad is found. Largemouth and smallmouth can be caught fishing slowly with jigs, tubes and small worms. Crappie in the northern lake have caught in good numbers and sizes. I haven't heard any reports about lower lake crappie reports recently.
Lees Ferry on the Colorado River is fishing well. As of December 1st, the flow increased over the November level and this rise should trigger a response in many of the fish to begin spawning behavior. Spin fishing from the drifting from the boat has been productive, as it is every winter. Bouncing big egg flies along the bottom is always an excellent way to catch numbers of quality trout around spawn time. Jigging marabou jigs and Kastmaster spoons as well as using spinners is also working on the rainbows. Fly fishing with the new water is best on the rising water while wading and drifting from the boat works well when the water is at its highest. Click here for my Lees Ferry Page
I wanted to let you know how much Tom and I enjoyed fishing with you. We learned a lot from you and caught a lot of stripers. You did a great job finding the fish for us and we will be trying the same techniques on the stripers here at Lake Pleasant. Your boat was very comfortable and rode well. We enjoyed the delicious lunch that you prepared for us. We were happy to see how good the fish cleaning facilities are at Lake Powell. Thanks again for a really enjoyable day on the lake. I would certainly recommend your excellent services to anyone! ~Al Jones
