Lees Ferry Report
January 17 & 18, 2011

I had my first guide trip of the year on MLK day and the day after. These 2 days were the toughest I've spent on the river since the passing of my mom many years ago. Rocky, the owner of Marble Canyon Outfitters, who's permit I work under, had just passed away 2 short days prior. At first it was a little tough to focus, but I managed to soldier on and after a couple fish came over the gunnel of the boat, I looked around at the beautiful canyon and dedicated the next 2 days to his memory.

This was a spin fishing trip with Jerry Yang the owner of Jerry's Cigars and all 3 Batteries+ stores in Tucson and his dad Moto.

We started bottom bouncing with big glo-bugs and did fairly well. Jerry and Moto prefer to cast and retrieve lures over bottom bouncing so they switched to using spoons and did very well casting to the banks adjacent to 3-6 foot flats with moderate current. The big surprise was that they caught 3 browns in the 2 days. Monday they caught 2. The first, a 16 incher came from a spawnning area we drifted over using gold spoons. Shortly before we called it a day, a fat pig of 20 inches ate the spoon from the same area. I didn't measure the girth like I did the length, but it was easily over 12". Another 16 incher came from the same area on day 2 but on a small orange glo bug. Funny thing, on day 2 they couldn't get many fish to take the spoons so we resorted to glo bugs and had good success. Shrimp pink, cerise and small steelhead orange were the best producers. In addition to the browns many rainbows to 18" were taken on the spoons and glo bugs too. The deep water, 12 feet+ didn't produce many fish for us.

Friends and co-workers from Prescott, AZ, Mike, Richard and Kevin hit the the river with me for 2 days. The river is running high as of January 1st. This makes wading a little tough for 3 anglers since most of the fish are still out in the deeper water. Nevertheless, Sundays slower release allowed for day 1 wading in an area with lots of shallow spawnning trout. As I spent time with each of the 3 guys explaining the proper presentation techniques, the sun came over the top of the canyon and the fish got happier. The men worked the area with some success until lunch and then we loaded up and started drift fishing from the boat. Around Duck Island, they had good success with egg patterns. Drift after drift, fish were hooked up; sometimes landed, sometimes not. Of course the big one, a male of at least 18" jumped and threw the hook. Day 2 found us right below the dam drifting again. We had some quality fish on but all came unbuttoned. We drifted several other spots with moderate success. All in all, it was a successful trip for their first time to the fish the Ferry. Looks like the fish are still getting accustomed to the new flows. They will get less finicky in the next couple weeks.

Hudson and Jeff came over from Vegas while on vacation with their wives and 2 of their buddies to hit the river for 2 days. While the wives stayed back in Vegas, the boys fly fished the river with Mick Lovett and me. We had 2 great days of spring-like weather and very good fishing. The release is a constant 18,500 cfs at the moment and that leads to very good conditions to wade as well as drift. Day 1 saw some quality fish off spawnning beds. Hudson had the big fish for the day at 18.5" After lunch we drifted several spots with good results on egg patterns and San Juan Worms. Day 2 we waded the entire time on the water. Bright orange glo-bugs (egg flies) were the best producer and accounted for at least 30 of 44 fish Jeff and Hudson landed for the day.

Jerry Yang was back again and he brought his buddy Rich with him this time. The spin fishing was as good as I've seen for many years. Bouncing glo-bug egg flies on the bottom was the best action but we also caught rainbows on spoons and Rapala minnows. The last day of the trip we kept accurate count and had 91 fish to hand. The fish averaged about 14 inches with many fish 16-18 inches for the 3 days. Great to have Jerry back and Rich (Mr. Stealth) had a great time fishing a river for the first time.

Mathew, his wife Lynn and their 10 year old son Jarret fished a day while on spring break vacation in the area. We fished stripers with anchovies at the Glen Canyon Dam and trolled crankbaits in Navajo Canyon. After lunch we targeted crappie and largemouth in flooded brush. Everyone had a great time fighting the hard pulling stripers. Jarret was cranking them in left and right.

John and his wife Carlie drove up from Lakeside, AZ for a fun day of mostly striper fishing. We started the day fishing at the Glen Canyon Dam. Fishing was fast and furious. John and Carlie had many double hookups. 1/16 oz. jig heads and 1/4 oz. Carolina rigs took fish equally. After we filled the ice chest to the brim, we had lunch and headed into Antelope Canyon to do some bass fishing and escape the wind. John took a few little smallmouth on tubes from the deep cracks and shelves. We caught the beginning of the rain as we pulled the boat out and filleted the cooler full of stripers at the cleaning station.

I've been out with clients 3 days in the past 2 weeks. The stripers are still very much on the feed. Sight fishing over shallow rock shelves has been productive with 3" grubs and light rods as well as normal anchovy fishing methods.

Summer 2011

Very good fishing continues. The constant flow from Glen Canyon Dam of 25,000 cubic feet per second has the fish in a very good mood. The higher flow stirs up lots of food and is rapidly expanding the amount of shallow water that will grow algae and support the food chain which depends on the algae. Fly fishing: The cicada hatch has been less than we were hoping for but nevertheless, throwing big dries is still good action. Trout are looking for the big insects in some but not all areas along the banks. Many days lately we have started cicada fishing around 10 or 11 in the morning and never looked back. Until that time, the best action is deep nymphing with scuds and midges with a long leader and indicator from the drifting boat. Wade fishing is also available, however in very limited spots. Fish have moved into the lanes in between the flooded bushes and it's like fishing a small stream. Short rods like my favorite 7.5 foot Sage can even used for dry/ dropper fishing. The cicada bite will be over by the middle or end of August and wading and nymphing will be the order of the day.
Spin fishing: One word, excellent. Bouncing big glo bugs on the bottom has been very productive and producing fish up to 18-19 inches. Marabou jigs have been good as well, Ripping the jig of the bottom and letting the fall back is a good way to get hard strikes. Kastmaster and other heavy, compact spoons are also producing well.

2 days fly fishing with 2 laid back guys. Very good dry/ dropper fishing with sz 16 and 18 beadhead Zebra midges. Wooly Buggers also took many fish fished over flats on sink tip lines. The only down side at the moment is there are scads of tiny  trout from this year's excellent spawn. Fishing the Buggers helps keep the small guys off and the larger fish on. The biggest fish of the weekend was a nice 18 incher from the 4 mile bar area.

Great spin fishing trip today. Everything worked; Kastmasters, maribou jigs, Panther Martin spinners and bottom bouncing big eggs. We had 6 fish between 16 and 18 inches. Some spots produced better than others but that's the norm.

Fun day with 2 beginners Janelle and Alec and their son, Bret who was experienced. After some brief pointers, I set Bret on his way to fish the riffle area of our first spot. Class was in session for mom and dad. Casting, drifting, mending, hooksetting and fighting fish instruction took about an hour. Soon, Janell and Alec were fish on their own with many pointers from me. We fished 3 spots for the day and each one yielded fish on dry/ dropper and shallow nymphing rigs. Bret finished up the day with several fish on a 2 tone worm pattern at Russel's Bar.
Good times, good fishing and good company.
