Lake Powell Report
February 23, 24, 2012

Tough conditions for striper trolling. We tried several areas with no success. Anchovies did not produce stripers either. Dropshotting for smallmouth was decent on 15 foot deep flats with scattered brush. The smallies are fat and ready for the spawn.

Fishing was good for my clients this weekend. We fished several spots with success at most of them. Eggs, blood worms, Zeebs and buggers.

I fished upriver with 3 clients today and the bite was wide open! Yesterday was just as good they said. Dry/ dropper, double midges or egg/ midge. My 3 guys landed over 130 fish and had many, many come off. The midge hatches aren't even heavy yet. Many sight fishing opportunities both over flats and drop-off areas. If you have never been here now is the time!
Lake Powell Spring Report
April -May, 2012

Bass fishing was as good as it gets here on the Big Pond. A dry winter in the Colorado, Green and San Juan drainages led to very stable lake levels in Powell in 2012. This provided excellent angling for smallmouth, largemouth, walleye and crappie. Sight fishing for bass on spawning beds was outstanding since the lake level didn't really move. Normally, the spawn happens right when the lake level is rising rapidly and the fish are not visible on their beds for more than a couple weeks. A welcome addition to this year's boated fish are a drastic increase in the catch rate of walleye. These tasty fish are showing up while fishing for smallmouth on rocky structure and trolling for stripers over submerged brush, or targeting them with walleye specific methods like bottom bouncers.
Early in the spring the stripers were found in the submerged brush by trolling or casting shallow running plugs. As the water warmed and their spawn approached, they quit feeding in the day and seemed to be on a night bite. Around the second week of May, they went back on a daytime pattern and could be caught trolling over brush. As of  5/19 there were several "slurps" reported. Slurps are  small pods of stripers, often yearlings, sipping newly hatched shad off or near the surface. These slurps should turn into full fledged violent boils of adult and juvenile fish within 3 weeks or so.

Spring, 2012

I have been guiding on the Ferry many times this spring. The fishing has been excellent both with fly and spin fishing techniques. On the fly fishing side, double midges on a shallow nymphing rig have been lights out on most spots. Swinging black or olive woolly buggers on a sink tip line has been very good in moderate to fast currents also. Spin fishing with bottom bouncing big eggs worked but jigging 1/4 oz Kastmaster spoons was better.

Lake Powell Report
June-July, 2012

Lake Powell has a been a bit of a fickle creature recently. Some very good days mixed with some ok days. The stripers are boiling on most days especially very early in the morning. Recent monsoon rains are helping out greatly with cloudy skies in the mornings. This prolongs the boils greatly. On sunny days, the boils are mostly done except in shady areas along high cliffs by 7am. The trolling for walleye remains fairly good with mid-depth crankbaits. Smallmouth are often caught with the walleye off the flooded tree tops. Jig fishing is always a consistient way to put fish in the boat this time of year. Single tail Yamamoto grubs are a favorite. Broken rock, especially with scattered bursh is a good place to find smallmouth and the occasional walleye. The trusty dropshot rig is a go-to method to provide good action from smallmouth.

Rainbow trout fishing is excellent! Summer means cicadas at the Ferry. These big bugs are a nice change of pace for the trout which normally feed on much smaller aquatic food sources. I have been out many times this Summer and the fishing has been excellent. As of my trip on the 22nd, it looks like the cicada bite might be winding down a bit. The wade fishing was excellent however. Randy and Jeff from Scottsdale fish with me on the 22nd and the wade fishing was very good. Dry/ dropper fishing was very good in riffles and shallow nymphing (4-6 feet) was excellent in the deeper runs just below the rifles. Just before lunch, we did some drifting with long heavy nymphing rigs below the dam. This produced the biggest fish of the day on scuds and worms. After lunch we fished the cicada dries to select banks and drew some nice strikes from several aggressive trout. A great day on the river once again.

TV legend fishing and show host got together with fellow show host Jarrett Edwards to join me on Lees Ferry for a day of spin fishing. Jarrett has his own show on World Fishing Network on Dish channel 394 and some Comcast networks and Sportsman Channel called Jarrett Edwards Outdoors. Roland's show airs on NBC Sports Channel. We had a great time catching the feisty Lees Ferry rainbows using 3" Yamamoto grubs in green pumpkin color. Yamamoto made a special batch without salt so we could stay within the "no bait" regulation on the Ferry. Using scented or salted plastics is against the regulations and both Roland and Jarrett are sponsored by Yamamoto, thus the need for the special pour. Boy, did the fish love the grub. We fished over flats  and along steep banks with 1/8- 1/4 oz. heads. On the steeper banks, we used a 1/4 oz. marabou jig with a grub for a trailer. Jarrett rigged up with 2 pound flourocarbon and a 7 foot medium light St. Croix rod and Roland used 10 pound braid with a 4 pound flouro leader on the same rod. Jarrett's wife Rebecca is the consummate pro on the camera and gets all the good shots. This was my second show with Jarrett. We shot a fly fishing show on the Ferry Labor Day 2010 at 8000 CFS and spanked 'em. Jarrett's show will air during his 5th season, which starts on WFN 9/7/12. UPDATE: this show was on-air starting 10/19 and is rerunning now.

A very nice Israeli couple, Elihay and Lilah called last minute for a trip. I was happy to show them our beautiful lake. Lilah had never fished before and naturally, she was the first one hooked up to a hard pulling 3 pound striper. I have been on a school of stripers close to Page and they were right where I left them after the last trip. Elihay was and experienced angler and was used to the jigging spoon method we used on the 50' deep fish. We managed to stay on these fish for over 2 hours and the couple had a great time. When the stripers disappeared as they sometimes do, We went smallmouth fishing with 5" Yamamoto grubs with success and finished up the day with a active school of smallies from a small island.

Excellent spoon bite. I guided my former dentist and his wife/ dental partner from Tucson plus 4 others on 9/17 off their houseboat parked in Gunsight. We found the first school 200 yards from the house boat and stayed on it for over 2 hours. They kept me busy with 5 at a time hooked up. No room in the fish cooler after about an hour.  Most of the fish in this pack were of the 1-2 year old size with several 3 pounders to keep everyone happy. This was one of the biggest striper schools I have ever been in. Then that school suddenly disapperaed. We graphed for a while to find them but they must have went the opposite way we were looking. We soon found a different school about a mile away and it was on again, this time there were many fish over 3 pounds and we released most of them because of lack of space. After an excellent meatball sandwich lunch and over an hour filleting fish, we cruised over to the west side of the pass in directly in front of Gunsight point and graphed until we found a smaller school in 50 feet and spooned some more yearlings. Another awesome day on the lake

Another spoon fest. 2 days with the Keller brothers from the LA area fishing 2 "split" days, 4 hours in the morning and another 4 in the evening. Sunday morning, we did very well on small stripers in Gunsight with spoons and a good number on topwater poppers. The bigger fish from a week prior just didn't eat that day. In the evening, we headed to Warm Creek and it was on for the bigger fish. We drifted north with the wind and stayed on the fish for about a mile. Again spoons were the hot ticket and just before darkness fell a massive boil blew up very near where were fishing. Many of these fish were 3-4 pounders. Excellent end to day 1. Day 2 and we headed straight to Warm Creek again. This time the fish were fussy and we didn't get many into the boat. After a while, we turned to fishing for small and largemouth with topwaters and caught a few from the flooded brush. The evening session was very productive again. Despite windy conditions, we spooned up many fish from yearling to 4 pounders. I love my job!

September 29- October 1st, 2012

2 guide trips, one on the 29th and another on the 30th and 1st. We were experiencing the effects of the full moon to be sure. The stripers we were on the previous week just didn't behave the same. When the moon is bright, stripers feed heavily at night and rest for most of the day. We stilll eeked out a decent amount on the 29th but had to work hard for them. The bass fishing was decent on topwater and grubs. The 30th and 1st was better, the Warm Creek school that has almost dissapeared on the 29th was back and ready to eat some of what we ofered. On the 1st, Friendship Cove had a excellent topwater bite for bass in the morning. Rock Creek was good for stripers after lunch. We ventured back to Warm Creek and got several good fish from that striper school before we headed in the the day.

JD his Dad John, friend Dave and JD's 10 year old son Seth came out with me today on the Big Pond. Once again, the stripers were the target and they were in the mood to eat when we found just the right spot to drop spoons to them. John had the first fish of the day, a small walleye. Then Seth hooked up to something that almost took him overboard, at least that what he'll tell you. Seth's striper tipped the scales at 4.25 pounds and was a great fighter. Jd and Dave and John got into the act and they had multiple double and triple hook ups. We ended the day bass fishing around the Cottonwood cove area and had some topwater action. 2 big stripers took topwaters but both came unbuttoned. Back at the cleaning station, we filleted a cooler full of fish and relived the great day.
