Returning clients Brett and his 11 year old son Eli brought Brett's dad Robin along to fly fish Lees Ferry for 2 days. Unfortunately, we experienced a strong winter storm in N. AZ over the weekend and the fish were a little fussy.  Eli had the first fish to hand each day and the most landed for the 2 days. Robin took top honors for the big fish at 16". Most of the fish were caught up shallow in fast water in primary riffles over drop-offs. It was great to see Brett and Eli again.

Took Clint and hiw wife Amy from Montana for a full day all the way up the lake to Rock Creek. We started in Dove Canyon with good catches of both smallmouth and largemouth on Yamamoto Hula Grubs, Senkos and tubes. At one point, we let the boat settle into the thick brush and looked for cruising fish and sight cast to them with success. The trick was to only fish the very backs of brushy pockets. Just before lunch, we made our way into Rock Creek. I had good reports of stripers and crappie in Rock and wanted to check it out first hand. We trolled for stripers for a while with no luck. There is tons of great looking brushy water all around in Dry and Main Rock creeks. We caught some bass and caught one 1 lb.+ crappie off an old cottonwood tree. Fun trip and good time with Clint and Amy. BTW, I can't find my memory card, so no pics until Amy sends me a couple.

The Munoz family contacted me about a trip where they could learn more about the crappie fishing on Lake Powell. Since I love crappie I was more than happy to oblige. We fished Navajo Canyon with reasonable success. We fished small jigs vertically under the boat and even sight fished for a few. The carp are every where this time of year and a nice one was caught on a jig and piece of ham. After lunch, we made the long run up to Last Chance Bay. We didn't find crappie in the spot I tried there but did manage to take a nice walleye on a Yamamoto Hula grub. The boys and dad were enthusiastic about fishing on Powell; great day.

A large group of 12 booked with Marble Canyon Outfitters who I work for on The Ferry and I took 3 anglers to fly fish the river. Fishing was tough overall for the group of 12, however I had very experienced angler on my boat and he went off on his own for the most part and did well. Schaffer landed a respectable number of fish including a fat 17 inch female from Power Line riffle. Most of the fish on the day took zebra midges or scuds. I spent most of my time with the 2 beginners, Cutter and Mark. They had a good time learning the details of casting and drifting.

The Petersons called me for a Good Friday trip on the lake. I was happy to take them out. It was post cold front conditions but we trolled up a good batch of stripers. We started in Warm Creek and found the fish around a submerged tapering ridge in depths from 10 to 25 feet. After finding the sweet spot, we hit a fish about every other pass over the structure. The fish were scattered but they were eating our Norman crankbaits nevertheless. After lunch we headed to Navajo Canyon and found the fish on a similar but smaller ridge. The nice thing about a smaller spot is that the fish are concentrated more. This spot produced fish nearly every pass with one double hookup. Luke and Jake the 2 boys, had a blast fighting stripers up to 4lbs 10 oz while their dad Billy and his wife watched with pride.

Fall is on us and the Lake is fishing very well for Stripers and smallmouth bass. Dropping anchovies down to hungry stripers has been very effective lately. Fish have been averaging 3-4 pounds and are very strong. The smallmouth fishing has been picking up and will continue to be good until the water drops into the mid to low 50’s. The largemouth and walleye have been showing up on occasion but will soon be more prevalent as the water cools into the low 70’s and lower.

The Ferry is fishing well. Steady flows of 8,000 cubic feet per second and shorter days have the midge hatches thinning a bit but the wade fishing is still fairly good, especially for smaller guys. Drifting with longer nymph rigs is a better bet for larger trout and producing excellent numbers. Many fish on the drift have been 16-18 inches. Anchoring or wading near back eddies is also producing. The fish hang out all day and just sip spent midges off the surface.  Another productive fall technique is to strip or swing buggers on a sink tip line. These fish are usually a bit bigger than the ones taking midge patterns.

September 6,  2010 Labor Day

A My buddy and fellow Pageite Jarrett Edwards has a fishing show on Dish Network channel 394 World Fishing Network. Jarrrett needed to film one more episode to finish off the 3rd season of Jarrett Edwards Outdoors. I suggested we hit Lees Ferry and do a fly fishing show. The fishing had been very good wading riffles, on the drift and dry fly fishing in back eddies. As it turned out, we only filmed while we waded 3 spots and it turned out great. We started at Ferry Swale Island which is about 11 miles upriver from the launch. We were having trouble keeping the better quality on. Most of the fish biggger than 15 inches came off before we could get them in hand so they didn't make it on the show. After getting some underwater footage, we headed upstream a mile to Prop Bar. The fish were eager, feisty and put on a good show. We landed the largest fish of the day here, an 18 incher. Again Rebecca shot more underwater footage and we moved one last time down river to 7.5 mile bar. As the light faded, I hooked a couple more smaller fish, Bec got more underwater shots and we called it a day. It was very interesting and fun shooting a show for the first time. I hope we can get back down to film a show on fishing the cicada hatch in July of 2011. The show is rerunning on WFN at least a few times per month. here's a link to Jaretts site and the trailer of the show: Lees Ferry Trailer
