Lees Ferry on the Colorado lies immediately below the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Simply stated, it's 15.8 miles of the most spectacular river scenery in the world. Rainbow trout live here and in numbers to rival any trout fishery on the country. The past few years have seen a resurgance of the numbers and size of the trout. The fish are wild, meaning all generations currently in the river have been spawned there. The last stocking occured in 1992. Spawnning takes place from mid-Janurary to May. That's half the year folks... This is one of the many reasons the fishery is such great shape.

How about the size of the fish? On a typical day fish will range from 11 to 18 inches with bigger fish possible. The average rainbow is 14-15 inches. Durring the spawn when many of the biggest fish of the year are caught,  it's not uncommon to see fish in the 20+ inch class. We might not catch them, but we sure get excited to see them and at least give those fish some attention from our flies or lures.

I guided full-time and year-round at Lees Ferry for almost 11 years from 12/96- 11/07. This equates to well over 2000 days on the river.  Most of my guide days chasing rainbows here have with fly fishing clients. However, I have guided countless days with spin fishing clients and I'm quite comfortable doing both.
I am currently guiding the Ferry for 2 outfitters. Lees Ferry Anglers 800-962-9755 and Marble Canyon Outfitters 800-533-7339. Be sure to specify that you want Kevin to guide you on the Ferry. Call me anytime for Lees Ferry tips and information.

"I can’t say enough good things about the whole day.  We had a great time fishing with you! I really appreciate the time and fly fishing instruction you provided to Svetlana.  She had a great time, and I’m sure you are aware how important that is! Spouse’s with good outdoor experiences means there will be more outdoor adventures in the future." -- Scott Davey, Tucson, AZ
2011 LEES FERRY FISHING

Due to the great snowmelt into Lake Powell in the past few of years, the fishing for rainbow trout had been very productive. The runoff brings vital nutrients for the food base the trout rely on at the Ferry. The excellent spawn of 2007 produced many thousands of juvinal fish which are now catchable size.  This spring and summer yeilded excellent fishing both off the boat on the drift and wading. Winter fishing will continue to be good. 12/26 will return daily fluctuating flows of 11,800 cfs to a peak flow of 18,400. This will be a good flow to sight fish for spawnners. The spin fishing on the drift recently has been awesome! Keep updated on the fishing reports page. Reports Here
