Dana and his 2 sons Tim and Alex from Colorado fished with me on a full day
trip to Lone Rock and Warm Creek today.
Lone Rock was a bust but we found them at Warm Creek. The three of them
caught about 35 stripers and some bonus smallmouth.

Fished a morning 1/2 day with 2 fun guys from Albuquerque. We had a great time catching lots of stripers with anchovies on Carolina rigs and tipping a 5" grub on a 3/8 oz. jighead with a piece of 'chovy. The fish were found 20 to 40 feet deep near Warm Creek Bay.

2 days on the lake, 2 days finding stripers willing to eat our anchovies. Again the mouth of Warm Creek produced many stripers in 20 to 45 feet. The fish range from 14" to just shy of 4 pounds. We fished for smallmouth as well and caught several on dropshot worms and 4"grubs in watermelon and shad colors.

Full day trip with 2 clients on the Lake. We fished for smallmouth from Dove Canyon to Dangling Rope. The small fish were eager in most locations, but the larger fish were tough. Grubs in different watermelon/ flake combos, smoke sparkle, shad colors and 4" dropshot worms took most of the bass. Many fish were graphed in the 20 to 35 foot range but refused most presentations. One spot near Dungeon Canyon yielded a few nicer Smallies on the grubs in about 8 to 20 feet.

Lees Ferry
July 1-8, 2006

Guided fly fishing clients at Lees Ferry 5 days. Wade fishing was good or better depending on skill level. Drifting with nymphing rigs worked well especially in the faster water. Midges, scuds and San Juan worms took Rainbow trout up to 18". Dry fly fishing is hit or miss. The cicada hatch is slowing down. There are not that many fish looking for big bugs now. Hopefully next year this hatch will be better.

The Shin's, Father and son fished a full day with me today. We started on the first turn in Navajo Canyon looking for stripers, but after waiting about 30 minutes after we chummed with no fish caught or seen on the sonar, we left for greener pastures. We pulled up to my reliable spot near Warm Creek and after chumming and waiting just a few minutes, we were hooked up. The action gradually got better as lunchtime neared. Some stripers took the baits on the fall in 10 to 20 feet, some were caught as deep as 70 feet, most were caught 35 to 45 feet deep. Carolina rigging worked ok but tipping a single tailchartreuse grub on a 1/4 oz jighead tipped with a small piece of 'chovie was the better ticket. After lunch we decided to fish for smallmouth in Warm Creek since we had a full cooler of stripers. We found all sizes of fish at 20 to 30 feet around main points and saddles between slick rock domes. The bite was soft and very quick. All took dropshot worms and 1/4 oz jigs.

Scott and Joan from Mesa fished with me for 2 half days and caught over 100 stripers on anchovies and 4 inch swim baits and several smallmouth on pumpkin and shad colored grubs and tubes. The stripers were found at 20 to 55 feet along the walls on the main channel and in Navajo canyon.

My friends, the Griegers from Houston fished with me in this morning. We fished for stripers near Warm Creek. The action was non-stop!! Several times all 5 of us were hooked up at once. We didn't really keep count, but I guess we caught about 80 to 100 fish before we motored back to their houseboat at 11:30 to fillet fish and have lunch. After lunch we briefly fished for smallies and found them around 25 feet. The bite was pretty subtle and fishing vertically seemed to help feel the soft hits on grubs.

After I left the Griegers, I met 3 flyfishing buddies from Los Alamos, NM and took them back to where the morning action was so good. These guys are not flyfishing purists and we fished anchovies for some fast action. 4 inch swim baits also took several nice fish. Then we strung up the fly rods with sinking lines and shad type flies. We caught several on these flies fishing nearly vertically at 25 to 35 feet.
